Earth Mother Characters

The earth mother archetype is a divine or mythological variant of the mother archetype. Earth mother figures symbolize impersonal forces of nature and the circle of life.

In their most common form, earth mothers are primordial goddesses of creation and destruction. Otherwise, they’re deities of fertility and flora, or they’re powerful spirits or fairy beings who inhabit deep wilderness regions.

The earth mother archetype is associated with both life and death, fertility and decay. Manifestations of this archetype, though, can be a bit one-sided. The more romantic variants downplay the cruel, destructive aspects of nature. And darker portrayals ignore or hide the generative aspects.

Definition

The earth mother archetype (a.k.a. earth goddess or cosmogonic mother) reflects the role of the natural world in our lives. Humans rely on nature and its processes for food and water. And all of our physical resources come from the earth. On the other hand, nature is violent and merciless. In the end, all that lives will die.
