Sky God

Archetype

Example of the sky god archetype: Charlton Heston as Moses, God's messenger in The Ten Commandments (1956) directed by Cecile B. DeMille

“God has set before you this day His laws of life and good and death and evil. Those who will not live by the law shall die by the law!”

—Moses

The Ten Commandments (1956)

Sky God Characters

Sky gods are rulers in the heavens and givers of laws on Earth. Figures who embody this archetype are usually sun gods and gods of thunder. In many mythologies, terrible storms and lightning bolts are signs of their divine retribution. And the sun, of course, is the source of light and, by metaphorical extension, morality and reason. Sky gods symbolize moral authority and cosmic justice.

Prominent Examples

  • Ra in Egyptian mythology
  • Apollo, Helios, and Zeus in Greek mythology
  • God in Dogma (1999)
  • Odin in Thor (2011)

Definition

The sky god archetype reflects an intuition that there must be a deity (or some such conscious entity or entities) responsible for maintaining cosmic order in the universe and dictating the moral laws that are to govern human behavior and the social order.
