Golden Shadow
Archetype

“I want to be just like him. Sometimes, I look at de la Cruz, and I get this feeling like we’re connected somehow. Like if he could play music, maybe someday, I could too.”
—Miguel
Coco (2017)
Golden Shadow Characters
Golden shadow characters are idealized in the eyes of their respective counterparts. They are the image of perfection. They symbolize the possibility of greatness in characters who doubt their own potential or feel unworthy of their aspirations. Golden shadows are the role models for their counterparts, as those characters fantasize about the future and begin to pursue their ambitions.
Golden shadow characters are often celebrities or legendary figures in their respective story worlds. They’re idolized, often from a distance, by the characters they are paired with. That distance obscures the human faults and failings of the golden shadows in the eyes of their adoring fans. This dynamic sets the stage for disillusionment when those paired characters actually get to know their golden shadows.

Definition
The golden shadow archetype corresponds to grand ambitions. In the negative, it reflects a person’s conscious belief that they might be incapable or unworthy of true greatness. It reflects the tendency to idolize role models, putting them on pedestals and making their accomplishments seem out of reach for ordinary people.
