Lover

Archetype

“Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.”

—Wesley

The Princess Bride (1987)

Lover Characters

Some archetypal lovers strive to earn (or restore) the trust and affection of their darlings. Some endeavor to reconnect with estranged partners. Others work to protect or rescue their loved ones from acute danger. Lover characters often symbolize the power of love in overcoming incredible challenges.

While the lover archetype can manifest in almost any sort of character, we tend to see it in young and attractive characters. Lovers typically pursue goals involving romantic relationships. But some are motivated by their devotion to friends or relatives.
