Builder
Archetype

“Now, I put the sweat of my life into this thing, I got my reputation all rolled up in it, and I have stated several times that if the Hercules fails to fly, I will leave this country and never come back, and I mean it!”
—Howard Hughes
The Aviator (2004)
Builder Characters
Archetypal builders endeavor to change the world through feats of ingenuity, engineering, and industry. They want their remarkable accomplishments to be felt and appreciated by the public. For some, this involves building magnificent monuments that will endure for centuries to come. For others, it involves founding businesses or designing products that will improve the lives of their customers.

Definition
The builder is the archetype of grand ambition. It reflects our desire to leave our mark on the world. While this can easily manifest in self-importance and self-aggrandizement, there’s no reason that our grandest ambitions can’t be channeled into projects that benefit the general public.
Dramatic Dimensions
Archetypes are fluid orientations, not rigid types. These are common tendencies and associations—they may or may not apply in any particular case.

Hero Variants
The build archetype is a variant of the broader hero archetype.
Other variants of the hero archetype:
Pairing
- Father: Archetypal father characters can present institutional challenges to the ambitions of builders.
- Maiden: Archetypal maidens reflect a focus on empathy and relationships that builders often sacrifice to ambition.
- Mother: Archetypal mothers might reflect the importance of family and loyalty that builders tend to undervalue.
- Shadow: Some builders engage in professional competition with archetypal shadow figures.
